More good news from National Grid, our rates will rise by 10% so that they can recoup their losses from homeowners who consume less energy by making their home more energy efficient, or from low-income families who can't afford the rising costs of energy. Expect your yearly bill to rise by $135, however National Grid will allow low income families a $5.00 monthly credit to help them pay their bill. In the meantime, those of us who can afford to pay our bill will pay more to offset their losses from customers who can't afford to pay their bill. There's something wrong with this picture. Though I can sympathize with the lower income families, why should I, or you have to pay more? I don't get this. Web Administrator National Grid Wants to Go Green With Your Money! Here are a few Op-Ed's about National Grid's proposal as published by the Post Standard: Gutters don't cause icicles to grow on homes (an op-ed in Sunday's Post Standard) To the editor: On Sunday, your Inside-Outside editor section had an "ask the expert" question about preventing icicles on a roof. Whoever wrote the answer is totally ignorant about what causes icicles! Icicles are caused by a lack of insulation. Gutters have nothing to do with the growth of icicles. Because of the lack of insulation, snow melts on the roof and runs down to the eaves, where the water freezes at the cold overhang. Whether gutters are there or not, the ice will form and grow all sizes of icicles. The correct answer by an expert is: Leave the gutters alone, insulate, air seal and ventilate. This will reduce the snow from melting and the icicles from forming and growing. The ice and snow will never go away as long as we live in Central New York, however we can reduce their effects with proper insulation, air sealing and ventilation. The bigger benefits are a warmer home and lower heating bills. Anonymous New York Homeowners supports this op-ed as truly coming from an "expert". We are experts at providing the proper insulation, air sealing and ventilation that your home needs! Please contact us to learn more about Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®. "Get Energy Smart!"
